Capacity Building & Strategic Planning for Voluntary Organisations

This training session is designed to equip Voluntary Organisations (VOs) with practical tools and strategies to enhance their effectiveness, grow sustainably, and plan for long-term impact. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of capacity building and strategic planning, tailored specifically to the needs and challenges of non-profit and community-based organisations.

Through a mix of theory, case studies, and interactive exercises, VOs will learn how to evaluate their current capacity, set clear organisational goals, and implement structured plans that align with their mission. The training will also address self-assessment techniques, leadership and governance structures, and approaches for sustainable growth and development.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Role of Voluntary Organisations: Understanding the social value of VOs and the distinct challenges they face compared to for-profit entities.
  • Governance & Leadership: Clarifying roles and responsibilities within VOs, ethical leadership, and effective decision-making.
  • Capacity Building Fundamentals: Defining core capacity areas such as governance, finance, operations, and human resources, and learning how to assess and improve them using practical tools.
  • Strategic Planning Essentials: Developing actionable, measurable strategic plans that guide growth and align with organisational goals.
  • Self-Evaluation Methodologies: Learning frameworks such as SWOT analysis and continuous feedback loops to improve accountability and performance.
  • Growth & Sustainability Planning: Identifying growth opportunities, implementing systems for scalable operations, and managing change effectively.
  • Outcome Measurement: Setting clear project outcomes, tracking progress, and reporting results to stakeholders for transparency and accountability.

Hands-On Exercises:
– Drafting a basic strategic plan tailored to each participant’s organisation
– Setting SMART objectives using the IDGS (Indicators, Data, Goals, Strategies) framework
– Creating a capacity-building action plan with timelines and resource requirements

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the session, participants will:
– Understand and apply key principles of capacity building and strategic planning
– Use self-evaluation tools to assess strengths and identify areas for improvement
– Draft and implement strategic plans that reflect their organisation’s mission

Each voluntary organisation may apply for a maximum of 2 volunteers, and each participant is to submit their individual registration form with their personal details. In case you wish to apply for additional member from your VO, please send us a request by email. This training session will have an intake of a maximum of 40 participants, hence we encourage VOs to submit their application as soon as possible to secure their spot.
