Academy of Givers

Held on 24 March at The Xara Lodge, the fifth edition of the conference brought together again business leaders, NGOs, policymakers, and sustainability professionals.

While Malta has long demonstrated a strong spirit of generosity, leaders at the Academy of Givers Annual Conference and Impact Fair 2026 called for a greater focus on structured, collaborative, and impact-driven giving to better address growing social and environmental challenges.

Held on 24 March at The Xara Lodge, the fifth edition of the conference brought together business leaders, NGOs, policymakers, and sustainability professionals to examine how more strategic collaboration and evidence-based decision-making can strengthen the country’s long-term impact.

“Malta is undoubtedly generous, but how much we give is only part of the picture,” said Mark Weingard, president of the Academy of Givers. “What matters even more is the impact we create. We already have the knowledge and innovation to give better; now it’s about focusing on outcomes.”

Under the theme “Giving Better”, discussions throughout the day focused on how organisations and individuals can move beyond ad-hoc charitable initiatives towards more coordinated, sustainable, and impactful models of giving.

The event opened with a keynote address, delivered by KPMG Sustainability Lead Rachel Decelis, featuring data-driven insights on Malta’s evolving environmental, social, and structural pressures. The presentation set the tone for the day’s discussions by highlighting the importance of evidence-based decision-making and cross-sector collaboration in addressing national challenges.

A fireside chat between Academy President Mark Weingard and internationally acclaimed Maltese tenor and philanthropist Joseph Calleja offered an inspiring reflection on the role of culture, leadership, and personal commitment in fostering a stronger spirit of giving and community support.

One of the highlights of the conference was the panel discussion “Malta – Can We Give Better?”, which examined how Malta’s longstanding culture of generosity can evolve to ensure dignity, sustainability, and long-term impact. Panellists discussed the balance between public solidarity and structured philanthropy, the role of businesses in driving measurable impact through ESG strategies, and the importance of ensuring that fundraising models protect beneficiary dignity while remaining effective.

Environmental sustainability and competitiveness were also central themes during another panel discussion, with expert speakers exploring how responsible environmental practices are increasingly becoming a driver for innovation, resilience, and long-term economic performance.

The conference concluded with a forward-looking panel titled “What Will We Do Differently Tomorrow?”, bringing together leaders from business and the voluntary sector to translate the day’s discussions into practical commitments and collaborative action. The closing remarks by KPMG’s Rachel Decelis encouraged participants to reflect on how their organisations can align strategy, governance, and partnerships to contribute more effectively to Malta’s social and environmental wellbeing.

Participants also engaged with a vibrant Impact Fair, where a wide range of Maltese voluntary organisations and foundations showcased their work, creating opportunities for partnerships between the corporate and social sectors.

A major highlight of the event was the NGO PitchFest, during which four selected voluntary organisations presented their initiatives to an audience of business leaders, philanthropists, and potential partners, helping raise visibility and support for their projects. The winning NGO, the Search and Rescue Team – Order of Malta, was awarded a prize of €5,000 sponsored by Betsson Group.

With a strong turnout of senior executives, ESG and CSR professionals, sustainability leaders, philanthropic foundations, and social impact advocates, the Academy of Givers Annual Conference continues to strengthen its position as Malta’s leading platform for strategic philanthropy, responsible business, and cross-sector collaboration.

The Academy of Givers extends its sincere gratitude to all sponsors and partners whose support made the event possible.
